Vastu vs. Feng Shui: Ancient Home Energy Systems Compared

Two ancient systems, two very different philosophies, one shared goal: a home that supports your life. Here's how to choose — or combine — them.

Both Vastu Shastra (from India) and Feng Shui (from China) emerged thousands of years ago as practical sciences of placing buildings and arranging interiors so that the spaces support — rather than drain — the people inside them. They share a premise but differ in approach.

The shared premise

A home is not neutral. Where you sleep, where you cook, where light enters, and where energy stagnates all affect health, finances, relationships, and clarity. Both systems treat the home as a living participant in your life.

Vastu Shastra in brief

Vastu is built around the cardinal directions and the elements they govern.

  • North — wealth, water, career flow
  • East — health, sunrise energy, beginnings
  • South — fame, fire, recognition
  • West — relationships, harvest, completion

Vastu prescribes which rooms belong in which direction (kitchens in the south-east, sleeping with your head toward the south, no clutter in the north-east), and where doors, mirrors, and water features should sit.

Feng Shui in brief

Feng Shui (literally "wind-water") uses the Bagua map — a nine-section grid laid over your floor plan — to identify zones for wealth, fame, relationships, family, health, creativity, knowledge, career, and helpful people. Each zone has its own element, color, and recommendations.

Feng Shui also emphasizes the flow of chi (energy) through a space: clear pathways, rounded corners, intentional placement of mirrors, and the all-important "command position" for your bed and desk.

Where they differ

  • Vastu is more directional and architectural — best applied at the building stage.
  • Feng Shui is more flexible and decorative — best applied to existing rooms.

Can you combine them?

Yes — and most practitioners do. Use Vastu for the bones: orientation, room placement, major renovations. Use Feng Shui for the breath: furniture arrangement, clearing clutter, choosing colors, and activating specific life areas.

A simple starting checklist

  • Declutter the entryway. Both systems agree: a blocked entry blocks everything.
  • Don't sleep with your feet pointed at the door. (Both systems flag this.)
  • Bring natural light and plants into stagnant corners.
  • Keep the kitchen clean — both traditions tie it to wealth and health.
