Love Compatibility Beyond Sun Signs: Synastry, Composite Charts, and Real Relationship Astrology
"Are we compatible?" is the most-asked question in astrology — and the worst one to answer with Sun signs. Here's what real relationship astrology looks like.

"A Cancer and a Capricorn? You're opposites — could go either way." That's about as far as Sun-sign compatibility takes you. Real relationship astrology uses two specific techniques that go much deeper: synastry and the composite chart.
Synastry: how you experience each other
Synastry lays your two charts on top of each other and looks at how each person's planets interact with the other's. It answers questions like:
- Where does their Mars touch your Venus? (Attraction.)
- Where does their Saturn land on your personal planets? (Lessons, friction, longevity.)
- Where does their Moon meet your Sun? (Emotional safety.)
Synastry doesn't predict "compatibility" as a single yes/no — it shows you the shape of the relationship: where it flows, where it grinds, where it transforms you.
Composite charts: the relationship as its own being
A composite chart takes the midpoints between your two charts and creates a third chart — the chart of the relationship itself. It treats the partnership as an entity with its own Sun sign, Moon, Rising, and life path.
This is the chart that tells you what the relationship is for. Some composite charts are explicitly built for growth. Some for partnership. Some for shared work. Some for endings that change both people forever.
What real relationship astrology can tell you
- Whether attraction is likely to deepen or burn out.
- Where conflict will repeat and what it's about.
- Whether long-term commitment is supported by the structure.
- The themes the relationship will keep returning to.
What it can't tell you
- Whether to stay or leave. That's yours.
- Whether someone is "the one." Astrology shows possibility, not fate.
- Whether love is "enough." That depends on what you both do with what the chart reveals.
How to actually use this
Bring both birth dates, times, and cities. Ask one specific question instead of "are we compatible?" — for example, "Why do we keep fighting about money?" or "Is this a long-term partnership or a powerful chapter?"
